Diagonal Stripe Necktie

Updated: Jun 15, 2022

Diagonal Stripe Necktie free crochet pattern

Difficulty: Beginner ✦✧✧✧✧

I found this gorgeous striped sock yarn at Stitches So Cal a couple of weeks ago and thought it would be the perfect yarn to make a diagonal striped necktie. I've been wanting to revisit my necktie pattern to see if I could come up with something a bit more unique and this was the perfect excuse.

After making an adult sized one, I had leftover yarn and so had to make one for my toddler. I can't wait to take Daddy/son pictures of the two of them wearing their matching ties!

The adult sized necktie is 60 inches long. The child sized necktie is about 50 inches long (not shown). The toddler sized necktie is 38.5 inches long.

I used sock yarn and a 2.75mm (C) hook.

The pattern looks great in an short-transitioning ombre yarn (like Knit Picks Chroma) too!

Gauge:14 hdc (as described below) in 11 rows makes a 2 inch square.

Special Stitch:

In this pattern, I hdc into the space between hdc (around all 3 loops, including the loop in the back of the stitch) to create a thicker stitch.

This eliminates the ridge that appears when you turn every row in hdc, giving the tie a smoother look.

I don't know if I'm just silly and new to crochet but I really can't understand this and am in need of a video step-by-step 😅

Hey, when turning, do you put the first hdc into the loop created by chaining (false first stitch)? If I don't do that the sides look great, but the stitch numbers don't match up. If I stitch into the false first stitch the numbers are right, but there are loops of string poking out at each side of the tie.
