Red Tailed Boa Constrictor

Here is a free crochet pattern for a red-tailed boa constrictor (snake) that tries to stay as true to the size and coloring of the real snake as possible.

I recently decided that I wanted to make a new toy for my son. He is at a phase where he loves to grasp an object in each hand and stretch it as wide as his arms (or the object) will allow. My husband suggested making a snake that could either coil up or stretch depending on how it is handled.

I opened up my favorite book of snake images, "Serpentine" by Mark Laita, and was immediately drawn to the dramatic color transitions of the red-tailed boa constrictor. Further in the book, there is also an image of a boa skeleton that curls back and forth is a most dramatic fashion. These were the inspiration for this snake.

I used a 3.75mm (F) hook with light worsted weight yarn (Knit Picks Mighty Stitch). I used less than 1 skein (200 yds) of each color (white, maroon, and black). The snake measures about 66 inches when stretched out and about 2 inches diameter at its widest point.

Special Stitches:

Invisible Decrease (sc2tog): Insert your hook in the first stitch and pull up a loop. Insert your hook in the second stitch and pull up a loop. Pull that same loop through both loops on the hook.

Reverse sc: Insert your hook in the stitch from back to front and pull up a loop. Then, pull a loop through both loops on the hook.

In white: Row 1:  ch 3, sc in the second ch from the hook, 3 sc in the next st, working in the same ch as the first sc: 2 sc in the same ch.       This makes a slight oval shape with 6 sc around the initial 2 chains (3 in each ch). Work in a spiral from here and throughout.
